When buying gold, silver or other precious metals investors seek out the lowest price for the highest quality.  Among the choices fitting these criteria is Provident Metals, based in Lavon, Texas.

Provident Metals deals in international and domestic bullion, numismatic coins, and currency.  They offer junk silver, war nickels, Canadian Maple leaves, Silver Rounds, copper bars and rounds, and more.  Investors or hobbyists can buy coin books, videos, scales, gold testing equipment, and safes.  Provident goes a step further than most companies dealing in financial security by also offering survival food and supplies including survival knives and seeds.

Provident Metals Review – What We LikeProvident Metals review

Provident Metals is a member in good standing with ANA and TNA, the national and state numismatic associations.  They are a dealer for NGC, NCS, CCE, PMG, and others.  Their website offers a free newsletter with industry news, real-time precious metals prices, market alerts, and other tools for investors of precious metals including a knowledge center, buying guide, glossary of terms, etc.

Provident Metals has had no significant government actions brought against them.  They recently partnered with Elemetal, LLC, a world-wide precious metals company in Dallas whose holdings include OPM Metals, Echo Environmental, NTR Metals, and DGSE Companies, Inc.  Elemetal is a recovery, refining, and minting concern.  As you can imagine, these associations will allow Provident Metals to offer competitive prices and indeed, they do.

Provident Metals Review – What We Don’t Like

BBB records indicate that Provident Metals opened their doors for business in 2008. (so they are a relative newcomer.  They offer no company history or background on their website.)  Update: Provident Metals has expanded the information they offer on their website and they also have an informative Facebook page.

There have been a number of complaints about slow delivery or orders not showing up at all.  Clients have cited receiving their order packed loosely in plastic ziplock bags with no cushion between coins and often no other packing materials.  Other anecdotal accounts include coins that have blemishes like grease marks and scratches as well as items being substituted without clients’ awareness.  The most common complaint aside from slow delivery time is an unresponsive customer service department.

To be fair, there are a few glowing reviews that cite fast delivery of exactly what was ordered, arriving well packed and in good condition.  Apparently, customer experience depends on whether the fulfillment department is having a good or bad day.

Provident Metals – Review Sites

The BBB (gives Provident Metals an A rating.  34 complaints have been closed in the last 3 years, 17 in the past 12 months.  Those complaints involve deceptive advertising, billing, and product or service complaints but 22 of them regarded delivery issues.)  gives Provident Metals an A+ rating based on 15 reviews, 80% positive and 7% negative.  There have been 19 complaints in the past 3 years, mainly about ads and delivery issues, with 8 of them resolved in the past year.

Ripoff Report has 4 complaints about Provident Metal Scam – they charge Provident Metals with false market loss fees; this apparently involves waiting until the price of the metal falls then levying loss/administration charges.  One complainant cancelled an order because of a misunderstanding about shipping costs and was told that the company would have to charge him a market loss fee if the order was cancelled.  There was also a complaint from a client that submitted a review to the Provident Metals website that no negative feedback is included in the reviews section.

Yelp lists 7 reviews, 4 positive and 3 negative.  Complaints are about slow delivery times, false credit reporting,  and shipping issues

BCA, TrustLink, CitySearch, Kudzu, and Insider Pages have no reviews of Provident Metals.

Provident Metals Review – Conclusions and Recommendations

Why 2 Stars – There are plenty of good reviews of Provident Metals but they are vastly outweighed by the litany of complaints regarding quality, fees, and delivery times.  Provident Metals has very reasonable prices and that’s why so many people are willing to deal with them.  If you can wait for your order and don’t care about the quality of the customer service department or your merchandise, by all means make Provident Metals your go-to dealer for bullions, coins, and various survival needs.  (We’ll give them 1 star until they improve their fulfillment department, quality control, and customer service.)  Update: We have added a star to Provident Metals rating due to their improved rating with the BBB.
